Sean Syrett, who works in the nearby EE store on Oxford Circus, said there was a “massive” crowd around the entrance of Poland Street, which remained cordoned off around 3.30pm.
“There are loads of people there just trying to see what is going on,” Sean said.
He and his colleagues had seen on Twitter that there had been a stabbing.
“We had two people come in earlier that were waiting in the store for everything to settle down – I think it may have been a bit much just with there being so many people about,” Sean added.
London’s Air Ambulance said in a statement: “We were called at 11.36am today (August 15) to reports of a stabbing in Poland Street, central London.
“We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene.
“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
“Our first paramedic arrived in less than seven minutes.
“Despite the best efforts of our teams, the patient sadly died at the scene.”
